Guess what? I have a quilt block in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 6! This edition hits newsstands November 13th, and it’s full of some pretty inspired patterns. From traditional to modern, I’m always so impressed by the new designs people can come up with.

My block is called “Reflecting Cityscapes,” I think for obvious reasons.

As you can see, it’s a very geometric design, and it’s great for stash-busting since it makes use of very thin strips and tiny squares. Of course, you can mix up the colors as well, and in this version I went for a gray background and slightly more subdued hues in the buildings.

I actually came up with the design before moving to my new home in the middle of the city, but it’s quite appropriate for my current urban living. This block is great for stringing together in a row since the cityscape motif naturally lends itself to a long horizon, so I took advantage of that characteristic when deciding on an arrangement for this little quilt.

I broke up the block rows a bit by adding little colorful squares that remind me of city lights, in keeping with the whole urban theme.

I’m also thinking this block would also make for a nice table or bed runner. What items or block arrangements would you make from a Cityscape block, or what colors would you use? Leave a comment for a chance to win a free copy of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 6 and be sure to check out the rest of the blog tour!

I am thinking that the solids work really well in the buildings, but I might use a marbled green on the bottom background and a marbled blue/white on the top background..I have a large quantity of blue and green solids, but I think those might be a little dull if the backgrounds are also blue/green. So maybe a hot pink floral for the bottom border, like the flowers they plant in medians..
A mottled red would also work for some of the buildings..like brick..or various shades of gray for the buildings and a more lively background..
Or you could go all Miami beach with the buildings in deco pastel shades..with beach sand and pale blue for the backgrounds..
I guess it all depends on whether the industrial feel is the important bit, or whether to emphasize something else..
shris the undecided..
I’d do a coloured skyline and a black and grey reflection. Thanks for the chance to win ;o))
As I watch your quilt as I thing this color is the right for it. Dark night sky and houses light through darkness.
I like it.
Liked the colorful buildings & the muted background to make the buildings stand out!
Cityscapes is an interesting quilt block.
What a great block!
I love your version using solids and I’d would do the same but with more solids!
I love it!
good iedae,l like
I am not sure I would change the colors if it were mine. I love the contrast between the grey and all the colors. I would really like to see this quilt as a table cloth. It would strike up some very interesting conversations at my table.
Very impressive. I’m looking for just the right design for a quilt for my daughter’s bed. I am having a love affair with black on black, black on gray, gray on black, and would add a splash of red here and there.
Nice block – I first thought of my parents who live in Pittsburgh when I saw this. Thanks for the opportunity to win.
I would use a pale blue background and black, white and grey for the buildings. Love your little quilt! Those tiny squares floating on the background really add to the overall look!
Oh I lvoe this! Looks great! I would love to make some pillows with this block!
I love the vibrant colours you have used , also your circular quilting.
I think your quilt is really great with the small squares is awesome looking. I love the little pops of color those add.
I’m thinking using a sky blue behind the top and a nice river/lake colored fabric for the bottom might be nice.
Another thought would be to use black for the background and add a nice orange-ish yellow/gold circle in a top corner for the moon.
As far as colors, I know for sure I’d use Purple with Gold, plus, Teal with Red. I’m not sure what other colors I’d use for the buildings.
Great block! I think a black background with neon building would make a great quilt for a tween.
Loving it with the grey background – looks very rich, very graphic.
Love the little quilt. I’d try a midnight blue background and make a throw for our spare bedroom. Thanks for the chance to win.
Nice block. I like your use of color, and a great way to use up some scraps.
I like your block….I think it would make a great table runner……I would enjoy using HALLOWEEN colors!

Hello! I noticed your block right away when I first browsed the new issue. I really like the little quilt you made with it. The circular quilting is really cool, too. It’s great to meet you. I’m just stopping by to say “hello”. Don’t enter me in the giveaway, I’m on the tour, too. Have a super day!
I love your block! I would probably make a pillow, but a table topper is a great idea, too. Absolutely love the gray background and the bright solids, but I might go scrappy with the building because that is just the kind of quilter I am
Thanks for sharing and for the chance to win!
I love your use of solids in this block! I think I would also use solids for the buildings, but would like to try a dark starry fabric for the background. Thanks for the chance to win!
thank you for a chance to win. like your block
What a beauty! Love the way you arranged it, and the circular quilting too! I can see it done up in all solids plus one print, or done up in Liberties, pales….really a versatile block. I think it really would look best on the wall as a mini.
This is womderful! Very striking!
hulseybg@gmail.com
A great block! I think I would play around with some fabrics that have a brick or stone design on them to give the buildings character!
Thanks for a chance at the give-away!
I would make your block with my hand dyed scraps so it would be all bright colors and keep with the modern feel.
Pippa – I’ve been admiring your work on ETSY. This is a great block / quilt. I think your color combinations work really well. I’m doing more and more with solids so I expect I would do a quilt – or maybe wall hanging size.
I like the idea of a blue and white background to represent the sky and maybe the buildings could be all types of gray stash. Just a thought. Of course, scrppy colors are a good idea to bust your stash. To be to win a copy of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, Volume 6 would be so neat and someone will be doing the Happy Dance.

I think your block would look great with bright jewel buildings and a shade that is not as bright for the reflections on a black background.
Love your block! I’d love to use it for couch pillows.
Cool idea, congrats and thanks for the chance to win.
I would try making a dotty cityscape! I love your version as it is so bright and colorful.
Love the solid colors!
Love it. My first thought was that it would make an excellent border. Maybe using just half.
Nice block. I like your color combination, I think I need to pick up some solid fat quarters.
fun idea like the square of the block and the circle quilting..
I really like the use of the solid colors. I think using a black background with some very bright colors would make the quilt “glow in the dark” — a cool effect.
I would make the reflective blocks really wild with happy hawaiian florals. mahalo
I’d do the buildings in Portofino colors and have them surrounded by Italian blue sky and Mediterranean water.
Really like your block!
I really like your block! I am learning about the modern quilt movement and this is fun to think about.
i think this would be a great quilt done in grays and B&W too!
I think your block is great and would be great made into a quilt! What a fabulous gift for someone who lives or works in the big city!! (or dreams of being there!)
This would be perfect for any city dweller. I think I would try in blues and greens.
I love landscape quilts and your cityscape fits right in. I would use those brights in the first block. not as realistic but great colors.
Great block for a table runner. I would use a dark blue background with jewel colors for the buildings.
I love the colors you used against the gray background, really stunning and nice contrast. I might try a darker background, maybe even black, can imagine how beautiful those shades would look and maybe done in batiks.
Debbie
Really cute quilt. Love the background.
Your block works up into a very nice quilt. It’s very modern and has a neat clean look to it.
I’d make a lap quilt of red, black and blue. Add some silver thread here and there and random Spiderman figure button on the buildings and voila! A great lap quilt for my 5 yr old son! Love love love the reflection part that’s in a different color! Congrats on your block!!!
Very clever!
I’d break it up by putting a river running through it, then having the lower blocks in muted colors reflecting the top buildings. Thanks sew much for this chance to win
I think I’d add the moon… LOL!
This will be a nice pattern for a table runner, I think! I have been looking for one lately, so I hope I win a copy of the magazine, so I can sew the runner with your pattern!
Gun, Sweden
I like your choice of colors with the brights and gray background. Looks like dusk in the city. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love this…it would make a wonderful “guy” quilt.
Love the vibrant colors!
Very graphic block and most suited for your current living arrangement!
Very nice and congrats. I would do a blue back ground with grey reflecion.
This would look great in my daughter’s house! Another project!!
your block is interesting! May I say different and original. Thanks!!!
I am not a huge fan of modern quilts but love your use of design and color it is so evocative of a city at night, or on a gray winter day.
I do think this block would work up into a nice table runner or wall hanging. Thanks for sharing a copy of the latest issue of 100 Blocks!
different, unusual, creative
I am thinking greys, white and black with only one Yellow window….
thank for this opportunity..
I love the grey background, and would do something very similar. would be a great table runner for one of my sisters
Love the Reflecting City-scapes quilt!
What a neat block. Thank you for sharing.
I love your block. I especially love the wall quilt you made. The circular quilting really sets it off. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the magazine. Hugs
I like how it looks like the buildings are reflected in water! Perhaps a fabric that looks like a sunset for the background at the top of the block would look interesting. I also think it would be a fantastic table runner.
Love the block! And great quilting as well, that I would like to try! A bit intimidated though…
I think I would use a light background and jewel tone solids or prints that read solid. I like the way you used the small blocks in between the rows.
I am really attracted to geometric designs. I love the gray with the color. I think it would make a great bed runner.
love the use of color and the dark background..i live in a city on a river and this reminds me of the reflection of the city lights in the water..well done…sign me up for the give-away…always need more inspiration!! hrtnmtns at gmail dot com
This block would make a great wall hanging. Tamsyn
I think this block would make a great purse made with a navy background with grays, blues, creams and a touch of red. Thanks for sharing.
These remind me a lot of my son’s LEGO blocks -they would be great in primary colors in a quilt for a child.
I might try a pale blue sky for a happier look for a pillow.
I could make a quilt for my bed, loved the colors you used, so I’ll try to use the same colors
I really like the circular quilting. It gives motion to an otherwise linear design.
Funky block! I think I would use my scrap tub and make a table runner–fun!!
Your quilt is super cute. It reminds me of a cityscape too. I also really like your pumpkin pillow. I love pumpkins and Halloween. Lovely.
I like the grey one the best with the circular quilting.
I think your block would be cute as curtain valances.
Love the block, especially when you put it together with the little squares to represent city lights. Great quilt.
I love the block. I might try it as a sort of “city at night” wall hanging in blacks, greys, whites, and some yellows. Thanks for sharing.
I would make a wall hanging! Love your block! Congrats on getting your block in the magazine!
I like the bed runner idea. My favorite color is blue and I think this would be nice set against a dark blue background.
I love the block. I would probably use a slightly darker background to represent night and brights for the buildings with maybe light yellows to represent lights on in the windows. The setting possibilities are enormous. I would just play with the blocks and decide as I went!
Oh, my gosh! I love the quilt you made with these blocks!
Your block is really beautiful I love all the colors and the quilt you made is gorgeous.
I think it would make a good bed runner, to add some color pop to a room. But I like what you did with it, (with the grey) and hang it on a wall. Thanks. Vivian
I have been a traditional quilter but I am so loving more modern quilts. I guess I’m movin’ on.
Very colorful block! I love it in solids
I really like the gray background with the scattered squares. It gives your block a very modern look.
Decisions, decisions…I could certainly use a bed runner so that’s what I would probably make first from this block. Colors…blues, greens, purples, and yellows or gold.
I think the dark grey background and bright houses works very well. It would be a fun wall hanging.
gee, is there some way you could make the city scenes seasonal???
I really like your block. Very clean looking, but still quite interesting. The version with the lighter gray background would be the one I make.
Very cool block, would look good with so many combinations. Im just getting into ‘modern’ quilts so would have to experiment with colors to see what speaks to me. Thanks for the chance!
Love your bright colors. I would use hand-dyes and lighten the gray a bit.
I like the little quilt that you made that’s on the back of the chair. The only change I would make is to use darker color for the background. Thanks for the chance to win.
When I saw the single block, I didn’t care for the colors. But when I saw how you combined them with the squares & quilting, I loved it. I might try it with some green & orange, blue & orange, purple & green, & blue & green. It will be hard to come up with a better arrangement.
I could see using this block as part of a playmat for cars and trucks. Very neat. Thanks for the chance to win!
Wow Love those colors
Your quilt is gorgeous and it’s difficult to think of any other setting. So, I flipped the concept and thought about making cityscapes of an old town with some reproduction fabrics.
I’d like to try black and white and red.
I would not change any of the colors, the grey reflects evening/night, the bright colors of the units help show up the windows. I love it.
Nice block. I like having a different background on the bottom half.
I think I would like your design done in very wide wall hanging for a hallway.
I think a pillow would be nice. Congrats on being selected for the magazine.
I love your cityscape block & they way it made up into that adorable quilt. I will definitely use my stash & scraps so who know what fabrics there will be! I might even add some prints.
I loved hearing about your family trip to Chicago. Brought back heartwarming times spent with my parents, sister, and brothers. I love quilt blocks with buildings, houses, towns, etc. A great block for Vol. 6! Thank you!
I would love to make a tablerunner. This is really great!
I like the way you made the little quilt and the circle quilting brings it altogether. Neat idea!
Interesting block. I can see it made as part of a tote bag.
Just love your quilt! The little city lights between the rows and around the border are just perfect!!! Congratulations on getting a block in the book!!!
I think it would make a great kids quilt. I would put animal pictures or flowers I the small center squares. Kinda like an I spy quilt.
I love the gray background, but I have a blue/black mottled with a little bit of sparkle that I think would work perfect! I think a bed runner would be smashing in this design…and maybe a couple matching valences?
What a great modern, fresh block. I love the wallhanging that you made. I think the colors you picked are perfect. Wonderful block.
I like your bright colors, but might use a dark background and bright yellow for lights in the windows.
Love the block….thanks for sharing
What a great design idea! Love the fabric color choices, too!
I think using pastels for a baby quilt would be cute.
I think I would use a black background and then shades of blue for the buildings. Great block!
lisamcgriff(at)hotmail(dot)com
Congratulations! I’d use a dark blue background and black buildings with white lights to look like a nighttime city and make a table runner.
I think your fabric choices are just perfect. It would not really work with patterned fabric. I like the clean modern look to this quilt.
Great block! And I really the finished quilt too. Congrats on being published and thanks for the chance to win!
I’d like to try your block in bright colors too. I love your quilt with the small squares between the row of homes.
Don’t know that I would change it from the colors you have chosen unless I used fabrics with a bit of texture. Maybe black or navy background with various grey colored buildings.
I’ve been thnking of doing a road quilt or afghan for my great-nephews, to run small cars and trucks on–a play mat kind of thing. This block would work very well for the sides of streets, maybe single rows, not the reflections or both. It’s a possibility.
I think the colors you’ve chosen are awesome. They really pop. I think it’d be neat to see it with a black with small scattered stars as the background too.
I love this because it IS happy! I caonnt believe you jumped in and made this after a few months of quilting. Then again you are an amazing talent and youre never afraid to just go for it. You’re an inspiration to me every time you post ! You remind me it’s only fabric and the whole process is meant to be fun.
lovely block, like your colors, but see it as maybe a darker shade of blue on the bottom to go with the reflecting skyline on water. angeliabarger@att.net
I like the solid colors and think I would go for a dark sky-it would make the colors pop.
Beautiful block! Thanks for sharing it!
I would try a blue sky background and have it as a wall hanging
This is so striking. I love the grey background and struggle to think of what other colors I would use. Also love the circular quilting pattern. Congrats on your block and thanks for the chance to win.
Fun! Black with lots of pinks and purples!!
really cool block!
i love your block that was in Vol. 6 of the 100 block Book. Hope I am able to win the volume you are giving away, but regardless if I win it or buy it I HAVE TO GET ONE.
I love the black, could use a brighter pink though and maybe some dark green.
I love the way this looks! I think it would look nice with a black backdrop and then they would look like they were shining in the night time!
NyRoraback@aol.com
thanks for the chance to win. neat block
Neat block! I can think of all kinds of things to do with it. Put people in the “windows” of the buildings. Make it look like a dept. store, endless ideas.
I love the colors you used. This is a fantastic quilt.
I love what you have done with the block. I am finding I can get out of my comfort zone when I see something like this.
I love the grey background. We had an apartment in Midtown Manhattan for a few years.
Your quilt reminds me so much of Midtown. Very sophisticated and exciting.
Great job.
Nancy
I really like your block. It has wonderful possibilities. Thanks for the giveaway.
I would make a pillow or table runner.
what a fun quilt!! I love it…I think if I made one using your block, I would have to do black, white, with some yellow windows and a touch of red somewhere…plus a gray background. Too fun! I live in the country now, but was born and raised in the city!! Thanks for the chance to win.
mhardey (at)ymail(dot)com
Love this block. It would be great in any color.
The quilt is fabulous. I need to try a grey background again soon.
I’ve been wanting a few lap quilts (or kitty quilts), and this would be a great pattern for that, considering that I grew up in a big city. Love the grey background too (because I love grey)
Since I like the warm weather of FL in the winter time, I think I would like to use art deco colors. Thanks for the chance to win.
Your block has such a strong graphic character that I think it would look great in black and white fabrics.
I love it as a mini cityscape.
The solid colors really stand out the grey background.
I would use the quilt as a bed runner. I am finishing a current quilt and that one would look great with it – add some snaz. thanks scarlette shobbs@scarlette.com
This would be great as a long pillow. Great block.
Love this block. I think that I’d repeat it to make a vertical rectangular hanging for the end of my hallway.
Your version here looks like a city after dark. I like that idea, so I would do a version with a dark blue to represent the night sky, maybe using a batik.
What a great quilt! I love your colors and the grey background is wonderful. If I was to do something different I might choose Christmas colors or maybe blues and whites and make it like a winter scene. Thank you for your giveaway.
missmoozie(at)gmail(dot)com
Gosh your quilt is amazing! Love all the solids. I think I would do something similiar to your quilt. I saw someone mention Halloween colors, that would be cool.
Thank you for a great giveaway and a chance to win.
usairdoll(at)gmail(dot)com
I think the cityscapes would be fun to combine with paperpieced cars and fire engines for a really cut kid’s quilt
What a wonderful quilt. I might pick a more blue background but also use solids.
What a great block. We are huge fans of NYC, so I think I’ll make a wallhanging from a series of three blocks, to hang over our bed. I think it would look great in deep colors–burgundy, green, blue, gold.
Great quilt block. Would be a great pattern for guys.
I absolutely love this quilt!!! Beautiful work!!!
Fantastic quilt! Love the quilting and the block! Congrats on being in the issue.
Those colors are lovely. I especially like the gray background.
That is absolutely stunning! So many possibilities for your block design…
I LOVE this, especially the circle quilting:-) Congratulations!!!
Nice block and great colors you used. Thanks for a chance to win
I’d probably use bright (not neon) colors for this quilt. Great job!
Congrats on the block!! It’s awesome and so versatile. I would like to use an aqua blue background, with pink, red, and white. I’ve seen some cute prints that would look nice. Or maybe gray background, with orange, aqua, and a lime green? So many possibilities@!! Thanks for the chance to win
I would use a dark background, maybe with sparkly stars and bright colors in the bulding windows. Thanks!
Very inspiring, can’t wait to try it; hope I win a copy of 100 blocks. How did you do the circular quilting pattern; domestic or long arm? It suits this city quilt very well.
I love the way you use color and the geometric designs – looks like an architect – thanks, scarlette shobbs@scarlette.com
Now this is my kind of block! Lots of small pieces and great graphic design…love it! I would make a light blue sky and lots of colourful bright houses like in Newfoundland!
I think this is perfect as-is! I might like to try a night sky kind of blue…
I really like the use of brights, I would do the same but not with solids. Thanks for counting me in for the draw.
I like your idea for the table runner. The possible color combinations for the buildings could reflect the season. Blues on a white background (winter) bright spring colors….. Thanks for participating in the blog hop.
The circular quilting really added a great final touch!
Nice block. Would make it very scrappy, to depict the older houses and high rises in a city. Thanks for sharing.
Cute idea, I like geometric designs
thanks!
