Cereal is pretty popular in my house (er, apartment) these days. Personally, I prefer the leftover sugary milk– which may sound gross, but seriously you should try it– however my husband is a hardcore fan of fortified grains for breakfast. He’s not super picky but he does have preferences: frosted flakes are a favorite, as are apple cinnamon, honey nut, and multi-grain cheerios. Chocolate anything is unacceptable. Coco Crisps and Sugar Smacks are simply out of the question.
And actually, milk is optional… as is a bowl. Apparently several fistfulls will do the trick.
I’m always on the lookout for new shapes to add to my quilting repertoire and it turns out, my husband’s breakfast habits are an excellent source. He recently informed me that Toucan Sam is “an old friend,” so I stopped by the grocery store (not the usual Whole Foods, of course) and picked him up a box of Fruit Loops.
Can you believe these are actually whole grain? Best not to ask where those colors from…
Of course, it didn’t take me long to see the possibilities– and since Local Collection requested some pillowcases…
Bet you saw that one coming.
This design was a wonderful opportunity to combine both regular and reverse applique, which I worked on while manning my booth at SOWA.
Add some swirly-whirly quilting, and voila.
Every finished piece always brings on a certain emotion; pride, disappointment, satisfaction… but to be honest, these pillowcases just make me laugh.
