OK, so I’m slowly finding my sewing groove again. I’ve come to realize that I need a certain level of constancy in life to be productive in my quilt making. My days need at least the barest outline of structure and predictability… furniture helps too.

One of the surest ways I maintain a sense of balance in life is working out. Yep, one of those people. I’m a big believer in daily exercise– which corresponds well with my belief in nightly dessert– and this particular pattern came to me during one of my morning runs. I was tumbling over various possibilities, trying to think of something fresh and different, not overly complex, a combination of the improvisation and structures that I crave.

This simple circular design fit the bill. Though let me tell you, curved piecing is more than a little tricky and only so conducive to improvisation. Hey, I made it work.

Obviously, I have my go-to designs, and I’ve been duplicating a lot of past quilts these days for various commissions and upcoming book promotion (gah!) But it’s always so refreshing to delve into something new, whether quilt related or otherwise. Life’s a-changing, in big and little ways, and I love all the newness. There’s the obvious: a new home (which means new grocery store, post office, pharmacy, and therefore daily routine in every way). And then there are all those little tidbits… new favorite TV show: Sons of Anarchy, new go-to breakfast: cinnamon sugar oatmeal with Nutella (this comes after about a year of peanut butter and jelly for breakfast… what have I been missing?!), new routine afternoon activity: strolling along Comm Ave with Martin.

And I’ve securely squeezed quilting back into the swing of things. I guess in a way, every quilt I make is that comforting combo of old and new.
